Little Dude turned 2 1/2 on Feb 10th and I'm proud to say he's potty trained. I'm so proud of my son. We learned last week that when our lease on the house is up March 31st the home owner won't renew as they are moving back into it. So the search is on for a new house. Our renter in the home we own left Feb 1st due to a deployment. They are a military family. So our property manager has a hunt of her own as well. I'm trying to let God take care of it and believe it'll all work out, but come on. I'm a control freak. It's a real challenge for me. I'm hoping to tweak my grocery budget (since I have a feeling we'll be paying more in rent for our next place) so I'm going to try and post my weekly shopping trips and menu so I can get a better picture of where my money is going. But if you've read any of my posts I'll tell you right now to not hold your breathe. At least I'm being honest! Let see what Monday brings.Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593696963201047056.post-33227304100050519762013-09-26T11:16:00.002-07:002013-09-26T11:17:23.599-07:00Little Dude loves to help mixMy little helper love to help, "mit it" when I'm cooking. Big Dude's birthday was recent and I made him a birthday cake while LD was napping. After the cake cooled I let LD help me make some chocolate icing for the cake.<br />

He's more independent now and tries to do things himself. Now that he's two (and tall enough) I'm allowing him to help me do the laundry. One of his jobs is to take the wet laundry I hand him from the washer and put it in the dryer. Now there is a fascination with putting things in the clothes washer and dryer. After spending a whole day not able to find my water bottle I went to do some laundry during nap time. This is what I found:<br />

When I went on day one I saw the butter on clearance for 3/5.00 but for whatever reason thought my coupon wasn't for it. When I went back to use it on trip two I saw the price went back to the regular price and thought I missed my chance for cheap butter. Preparing for trip #3 I was looking at the evic coupons and saw the .75/1 coupon and though it made a good deal. When I checked out I couldn't figure out why my total was lower than I thought and realized the butter was still ringing up the clearance price! Even better my coupon still tripled and the evic came off making my butter free and lowering my total!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As for the milk. I was completely out and we're going out of town at the end of the week and I only needed enough to tide us over for a few days. I can get a whole gallon of milk for 1.99 at Aldi. Harris Teeter was the complete opposite way from Aldi so I just grabbed my milk from Harris Teeter.</div>

I haven't gotten around to posting them because I started working part time watching 2 girls (sisters, ages 4 and 1) and that has completely thrown off my weeks! There were time I was going to the store at 9 at night (sometimes even on the last day of the sale). I'm getting my groove down. LD is loving having his two friends come over and play with him. He was the main reason I was wanting some children near his age. I don't think it's good for him to spend so much alone time with just me. He's learning to share and take turns, something he's only able to learn with other children. He's also got a jealous streak if I'm holding the 1 year old. He immediately comes over and wants to be held too.<br />
<br />
Here's 3 weeks worth of my CVS deals:<br />
8/25/13 weeks deal was good. If I could have found a second bogo coupon I could have paid a penny before taxes. <i>THAT </i>would have been scream worthy. I used 10 ecb's from <a href="http://livinbetter.blogspot.com/2013/08/cvs-81813.html">here</a> and only got a total of 8 back (5 and 3) so you could say I "lost" 2 ecb's, but I found it hard to keep rolling the 10 into a deal that would give me 10 back. It'll be easier to buy things my family needs and will use if I have a smaller amount of ecbs to roll. I have to keep reminding myself that even if a deal is awesome, if it's not for my family, I don't need to buy it.<br />

Funny story, When I went to check out and handed the cashier the $1.00 cvs coupon she said I couldn't use it. Now I know for 100% I can because the last page of the add said save $1 off any P&G item on this page <i>and</i> I saw the shelf tag stating I could save $1 on this item. I asked if she had an add by her so I could show her and she said she didn't. She said everyone had been using them on the puffs tissues and I could use it on that. I then said something like, "Oh, it can be used on any item on the last page of the add. Everyone else is using it on the tissues because then it makes them free. But I don't need any tissues". She then scanned it and was surprised it worked. This was on a Saturday afternoon. I must have been the only person all week long not to buy free tissues. Haha!</div>

Also, as I write this I'm beginning to experience some keyboard malfunctions. The keys won't type when I press unless I mash them many times and curse them and call them mean names. Time for a break. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><b>* We have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries. I had a mommy brain moment and never considered I needed to charge them*</b></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now on to the next week</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
9/8/13</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a new website. <a href="http://www.iheartcvs.com/">www.iheartcvs.com</a>. I can get a sneak peak up to two weeks in advance for CVS! It doesn't 100% match my local CVS add, but I can get a better idea of when to use my coupons or start <strike>begging</strike> asking everyone nicely for extra copies (It didn't work with my Head & Shoulders deal though, maybe I should have begged instead). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyways, I've worked out a great deal the next 3 weeks using my coupons and ecb's. I'm excited!</div>

It's only been in the 90's like 10 times or so. It's a great thing to have my family back together and enjoy some outdoors! Big Dude got a new grill this summer after we moved. We switched from propane to charcoal and we're loving it. He's the griller and I'm the sipper of wine for our cook outs (I do help with the sides). I got some chalk for Little Dude a while back and forgot about it (oops!) till now. I gave him a piece to play with and he absolutely loved coloring outside! It was hard to convince him to stop so he could eat dinner. I think there was a cookie bribe involved.<br />

This week's CVS trip is making me do another happy dance!!! I'm leaning towards believing the drugstore game will save my family money each month.<br />
I get a weird high from saving money when I shop. This deal had me so excited I was texting my mom late at night telling her all about my awesome coupon trip. Made me remember when I was a little girl after she'd gone through the coupons herself she'd let me cut out whatever ones I wanted (great fine motor skill activity!). I would go to the grocery store with her and push my pretend shopping cart and put my pretend groceries in it. And I never forget to point out all the blown up "bonuses" (Supermarket Sweep anyone??). Remember the blinkie coupon machines in the aisles? My mom had to make a rule I could only take one and then place it on top of the machine or I wouldn't get my cookie from the bakery. And cookies trump coupons any day. Anywhoo. Here's my awesome deal I did at CVS this week.<br />
<br />

I was browsing some blogs when I had some down time to myself yesterday and stumbled upon <a href="http://www.thecentsableshoppin.com/cvs-31-excedrin-migraine-store-coupon-as-low-as-free-or-74-with-upcoming-deal/#.UfpkF6LVDz4">The Cents'able Shoppin</a>. I had seen the Excedrin deal of buy $20 get $10 ECB's earlier in the week, but the coupons didn't look good enough. I had seen the internet $3/2 Excedrine Migraine, but without printing it to see the specifications needed I assumed it would be for the higher count and not the small 24 ct boxes. After looking at <a href="http://www.thecentsableshoppin.com/cvs-31-excedrin-migraine-store-coupon-as-low-as-free-or-74-with-upcoming-deal/#.UfpkF6LVDz4">The Cents'able Shoppin</a> I saw that it was a really good deal for the migraine 24 ct. I registered my<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>new CVS card the other day and my $4/$20 CVS coupon expired today so I printed off my (2) $3/2 Excedrin Migraine coupons and headed to the store with Little Dude.<br />
When we dropped Big Dude off at work he gave Little Dude one dollar. I told LD that he could pick out some candy (that was code for, "I know as soon as you see the Kit Kats you will want one so I'll let you buy one).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yoopJIiaVbQ/UfqYH0zgoqI/AAAAAAAAAFY/JmBUaZxap0A/s1600/cvs+8-1-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yoopJIiaVbQ/UfqYH0zgoqI/AAAAAAAAAFY/JmBUaZxap0A/s320/cvs+8-1-13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's my break down:<br />
(4) Excedrin Migraine 24 ct $5.49 each<br />
(1) Kit Kat $1.19<br />
Used:<br />
(1) $4/$20 CVS coupon emailed to me for registering my card online<br />
(2) $3/2 Excedrin Migraine <a href="http://coupons2.smartsource.com/smartsource/index.jsp?Link=U333IJOUFJEZG">$3/2 Excerin Migraine </a><br />
$5 ECB's from last week and $1.50 from earlier this week<br />
<br />
Total after sales, coupons and tax: $6.67 and I got $10 ECB's back!<br />
That works out to (minus candy and tax) $5.46 or $1.36 a box!!!!<br />
This was a good moneymaker for me!Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593696963201047056.post-35406463133512031132013-07-30T10:51:00.001-07:002013-07-30T10:51:57.819-07:00CVS 7-27-13 and 7-29-13. A nearly 50% and 75% savings!I made two trips to CVS the past few days. One a few days ago during last weeks sale and one yesterday for this weeks sale. My savings for the trips was close to 50% and 75%. Woohoo!!!<br />
<br />
I scanned my newly registered CVS card to get the coupon for the free roll of paper towels ( love freebies!). I also went to do the Colgate $5 ECB with a $10 purchase. The other soda and candy was a treat for the <br />
<a name='more'></a>Dudes back at the house. This trip I saved over 50% after sales and coupons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZnW-yu9XxnQ/Uff48hHg4PI/AAAAAAAAAE4/Kb-z8T6o2pE/s1600/cvs+7-23-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZnW-yu9XxnQ/Uff48hHg4PI/AAAAAAAAAE4/Kb-z8T6o2pE/s320/cvs+7-23-13.JPG" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's the scoop:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Kit Kats were $1.27 each and I got two. I realized after I got home and read my receipt that if I had gotten three they would have been $1.00 each. Oh well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The soda was on sale for .88 so I got three bottles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paper towels were free after CVS coupon (yay!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
ECB deal: Spend $10 on Colgate get $5 ECB</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Colgate mouth wash was $8.49 for the 33.8 fl oz (I had to get the large size to use my $2.00 coupon).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Colgate toothpaste was $3.29 for the 4.2 oz size and I had a .75 coupon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After sales, coupons, and my 5 ECB's from last week I spent $10.05 after tax and got 5 ECB's back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yesterday's trip was mostly more snack and some dish soap.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's my breakdown:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(1) Sunkist Soda $0.99-.30 CVS coupon= .69</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(1) Starbucks Coffee $1.50-1.00 coupon= .50 (got $1.50 ECB)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(1) Dawn dish soap $.99- .20 coupon= .79</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(3) M&M's candy- They were Buy 2 or more get them for $1.00 each and if you bought 2 you got the third for free. $2.00- .50 coupon= $1.50 or .50 each</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My total after sales and coupons and tax was $3.65 and I earned $1.50 ECB</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't use the 5 ECB's I already had so now I have a total of $6.50 ECB's</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My total saving was close to 75%!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Candy and soda is a rare treat around here and I am glad to be able to provide a nice snack for my family every now and then.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Time for a candy break!</div>

I keep seeing all these posts about people spending little or no money oop for all those items. I was inspired by Gretchen's shopping trips posted at <a href="http://www.moneysavingmom.com/">www.moneysavingmom.com</a> in particular.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
This week was my first time doing so and I don't think I did too shabby. <a href="http://www.forthemommas.com/">www.forthemommas.com</a> had the match ups all done for me and I just had to print and go to the store!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Here's my break down:<br />
<br />
<b>Kit Kat minis</b>- 2/$6.00<br />
used (2) $2.50/1 coupon (shared on Facebook to get the high value. I did one and my husband did <br />
also. I had to do the candy in 2 transaction because the 2nd coupon wouldn't go through)<br />
<b> Huggies Diapers</b>- $9.99 (part of the $5.00 ECB deal)<br />
used (1) $3.00 coupon<br />
<b> Huggies Wipes</b>- $2.99 each (part of the $5.00 ECB deal)<br />

Recovering from out move. The actual packing up wasn't the hard part (thank you Navy!!). I didn't have to do a thing but be at my house (and get a sitter for Little Dude), because, after 6 months away from my husband, we were finally able to move up to the DC area to be with him!!!!! And let me tell you after 6 months of solo parenting I was more that ready to move. Single parents, I tip my hat to you. I learned just how thankful I am to have the support of my husband.<br />
I found a realtor I trusted in February and both a renter and rental house in March. Big Dude worked <br />
<a name='more'></a>with a realtor up here to find a home. All I got to see were the few cell phone pictures he took when he toured the house. We moved in the middle of April (with our renter taking over our home 2 weeks after we left it).<br />
The packing up of my house was easy. They came on a Friday and 2 guys had me packed up by 4 that afternoon. We were scheduled for a 2 day pack out so my stuff wasn't getting loaded until Tuesday. Big Dude was able to come home Saturday to find our house filled with packed boxes. Each box had a number sticker on it and Little Dude decided this was the perfect time to become interested in stickers and he tried to pull them all off. I spend my Saturday morning turning all the boxes around so he couldn't mess them up. Went to a birthday party on Sunday and spend Monday cleaning the house. Tuesday our stuff was loaded and we were told it would be delivered Wednesday since it was such a close drive. The van drove away at 2:00 PM and we loaded up our 2 cars with our suitcases, bedding, pet stuff. The realtor came by and we gave her our keys.<br />
Big Dude goes out to start the cars so they can cool off before we load everyone up and......his car won't crank. At all. And we have to be at our new house for our furniture deliver at 8:00 AM the next day. We try jumping it off with my car and still no luck. Now it it close to 3:30 PM and I'm starting to get worried. We call our insurance and explain the situation to them. We have free towing included in our insurance and thankfully they agree to tow the car up to the DC area at no extra charge to us!!! We load up Little Dude in my car and drive to the closest car rental shop. After speaking to the lady at the counter she said she had a truck on the lot she wanted to get moved (guess no one was wanting to rent it) and she would discount it if we took it. I hurried back to our house to wait for the tow guy, who was already there. When Big Dude came back with his rental we loaded up his truck with the stuff from his car that he needed (dog food, pillows). It was close to 5 PM by this time so we grabbed some fast food to eat while we drove. The DC traffic wasn't too bad getting to our new home. We made it there by 9:30 PM. It was now completely dark as we drove into our new neighborhood and that's when I learned there aren't any street lights. I knew which one was our house by his car sitting in the driveway. We got everything we needed for the night unloaded and settled down to sleep for the night. Now it was close to 10:30 PM.<br />
The next morning our stuff arrived and I was pretty happy to discover nothing got broken or lost in the move. Little Dude was given permission to go find all the stickers he could after our delivery was finished and that kept him occupied while Big Dude and I started to unpack the essentials (like the T.V. lol). We weren't fully unpacked for about a month. Unpacking with a toddler takes <i>forever</i>. Big Dude had to go back to work a few days after we moved so it was just Little Dude and I. If I got 2 boxes done a day I was happy.<br />
We went from just over 1500 square feet to just over 1200 square feet so as we unpacked I kept a box and tossed stuff we no longer needed or had room for. I had just done the whole house back in March and was surprised how much more I was able to find. Where did all this stuff come from? I found so much I'm actually having a garage sale next weekend.<br />
It's been amazing having my whole family together again. Right after Big Dude left in October for his work Little Dude started having nightly wakings. I would have to go to him and rock him for a few minutes before I was able to put him back in his crib. Four days after we moved here it stopped completely. We're also enjoying family dinners at the table again.<br />
Except for the car drama this move was successful. Two more years and I can do it again.<br />

We never had them growing up unless I sneaked (I always want to write snuck, sneaked sounds so wrong) some from a vending machine with spare change. After I got married and had to make our grocery money stretch and I understood why. Those little tasty delights are expensive, even the generic ones! After I actually read the nutritional label I cringed. Those little tasty delights are bad, bad, bad for you! They come 2 in an individual package and that's supposed to be the meal. How many of you had more than one package? I know I have. How many ate a package for a snack? I know I did (WHAM~Hello thighs). So I rarely buy them. It has to be a super sale with coupons, and those corporations are catching on to me.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Big Dude likes to have them occasionally then he's running late for work. It's easy for him to grab and eat while driving. While pinteresting (ah, pinterest. My newest obsession), I searched homemade pop tarts and started looking at all the different recipes. A lot of people were using store bought pie dough. So I ignored those people. I mean, really? Homemade pop tarts using store bought dough?? Any who, I clicked on a few different <i>real</i> homemade pop tarts and then Little Dude woke up. So the thought went to the back of my mind and stayed there for a week. On a chilly day I was wanting to use the oven to chase the chill out the house and I remembered those pop tarts I never made. So I pulled out my Betty Crocker cook book and started making a pie dough. I'll post the recipe later, when I actually make a batch that is so yummy I immediately make another.<br />
It took my about 10 minutes to make and then I let it chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Then I rolled it out and started looking in my cabinet trying to find something to use as a cutter for the pop tarts. I found my box cheese grater. It's a rectangle and I figured it was worth a shot. I sprayed my cookie sheet with olive oil and placed my rectangles down. I had some strawberry freezer jam I made that I thought would go perfectly. It was my first time making the jam and it was super sweet so I thought this would be a good way to use it up. I placed about half a table spoon on each piece of pastry and then laid a piece on top. I crimped the edges with a fork and poked some holes in the top. I placed in the oven at 350° for about 20 minutes (they were beginning to brown). I took them out the oven and realized I didn't get all my edges sealed and most all my filling spilled out on the sheet. :(<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The 2 on the bottom look absolutely horrible.</div>
I let them cook on the wire rack and then tried one anyways. It tasted ok. There's a chance actually having filling inside would make it taste better (ya think?) so these need to have another go around. Next time I want to use whole wheat flour (gotta make them healthier!), and maybe less filling (maybe I overfilled?).Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593696963201047056.post-39127452020180636712013-01-09T19:04:00.001-08:002013-01-09T19:08:52.543-08:00Homemade Tater TotsHere's my review I promised!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I forgot to take a picture of the mixture till the end, oops.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I took 6 russet potatoes and peeled and diced them. I also diced a small onion and put it all in a pot. I covered with water, added salt and pepper, and let it boil. I took a wooden spoon and tried to mush a potato and it didn't work so I let it boil some more. A while later I tried it again and it smushed. I drained the potatoes in a colander then fixed lunch for Little Dude and myself (yummy pbj!). After Little Dude went down for his nap I put the drained potatoes (and onion) back in the pot and went to work with my potato masher. I left them lumpy like in the original recipe (maybe they were too lumpy?). <br />
Next I beat 1 large egg and added some more salt and pepper. Then I dumped it in the pot with the potatoes and added 1/2 cup of flour (all purpose). I took out my frying pan and added some olive oil (the only kind I ever use, seriously. I have a big gallon container of it and that's it. I use it for everything, even my baking).<br />
Once the pan was hot enough I took some potato mixture rolled it into a sorta ball, sorta flattened it, and kinda kept its shape as I scraped it on my hand and placed it into the pan. I did this till the pan was full then sprinkled garlic powder over them all. They are ready to flip over when they move loosely in the pan when you have a fork to try and flip them with because your spatula is dirty and at the bottom of the sink filled with dirty dishes. Now that they are all flipped is the part where I look back in the pot and realize this is going to take FOREVER.<br />
For my second batch I tried kinda plopping some in the pan and smushing them once I flipped them over. They weren't as pretty as the first batch and I prefer the first batch over the second. After I got the second batch cooking I could hardly wait to try one. They smelled amazing. After they cooled and I tried my first one I realized these weren't going to last. They are seriously that good.<br />
<br />
This is a dish I wouldn't plan on using potatoes for, unless they were starting to go bad. Next time I want to try leftover mashed potatoes (there's always some and never enough for everyone at the next meal). Also, since potato size can vary I don't think I had the right ratio of mixture. It was way too sticky to work with easily (another reason why I think left over mashed potatoes would be better). Did I mention they were yummy? There were none left over. Little Dude and I ate a delicious snack (and no, I didn't let him eat too many. I'm a mean mama like that).<br />
<br />

I haven't gone away forever. I've been busy working on the house after Little Dude is asleep. Big Dude got his new orders and left for his new dusty station on October. Little Dude and I are still here at the house. I have some work to do before I can rent it out. Painting (a lot of painting), flooring (both upstairs baths and pantry), grouting (the master shower that is taking FOREVER), new fence panels (2), fix the deck (replace warped baards, screw down where nails popped up, power wash, and stain), fix the gate, mulch the flower beds. It's been a struggle having 2 households, both financially and emotionally. Little Dude loves Skyping each evening with his daddy.<br />
My days turned into a boring routine. Wake at 7, breakfast, Morning Little Dude time, lunch, nap (research on how to do the things I was planning to do/ clean house), afternoon Little Dude time, clean house. Make dinner at 4, eat at 5, Skype at 6, bath, bed at 6:30, dishes/ straighten house, work on house/more research, shower, bed at 10 (or 11).<br />
Some weekends Big Dude was able to come home and it was nice to be together as a family again. For Christmas I went up there and was able to spend 2 whole weeks with no projects to work on and have a nice Christmas. As nice as it was to be there I got bored. I'm so used to being so busy as night that I didn't know what to do with myself. So I now have a whole bunch of pinterest stuff to try and fit in my day.<br />
I want to make more of my family's food homemade. I plan to try one new thing each week homemade, rather than it's store bought counterpart. This week's project was inspired by the Pioneer Woman. Long story short, last week I saw an episode where children where there for a sleep over and she made breakfast for dinner. One of the dishes was tater tots. Looks easy enough (don't these things always though?) and I've got some potatoes looking for a new home in my belly, so that's my project for this week.Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593696963201047056.post-84231026584799968872012-09-23T19:08:00.002-07:002012-09-23T19:08:18.354-07:00Menu Plan 9/23<br />
My maternal grandmother passed so I didn't keep up with anything much for a week. Getting back into my new routine now.<br />
<br />
<br />
Sunday 9/23- A lazy and cheap mac-n-cheese mixed with cut up hot dogs.<br />
Monday 9/24-Spaghetti<br />
Tuesday 9/25- Crockpot Chicken<br />
Wednesday 9/26- Chicken Salad Sandwiches<br />
Thursday 9/27- Chicken dumpling<br />
Friday 9/28- Tuna Cakes w/ salad<br />
Saturday 9/29- Chicken Parmesan<br />
<br />
All I need to buy for the week is milk for everyone (whole and 2%). Salad. And some more stuff I can't remember right now. (wow. My grammar skills are awesome.) I'm guessing I only need to spend around $25.00.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593696963201047056.post-48243075341490281042012-09-14T05:16:00.001-07:002013-01-09T19:06:08.726-08:00Homemade Drano<br />
The sink in my downstairs bath was beginning to slowly drain down. I went to pull out some Drano to clear the clog and low and behold: No Drano! My car was in the shop and Big Dude was at work so I couldn't get to the store. After a quick search on Google I found this recipe:<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
1/2 box baking soda (Been awhile since I had to buy some. Is it like $1.25 / box?)<br />
1/2 c. white vinegar (I buy the gallon from the Commissary don't have a price for now)<br />
1 qt. boiling water (Free!)<br />
1 wire hanger ( Free! mine came from an old trip to the dry cleaners)<br />
<br />
Cost: $ I'm guessing under $1.00 here.<br />
Much more environmentally friendly, much cheaper, and no fear of running out!<br />
With Little Dude becoming an adventurous toddler I now worry he"ll figure out how to get through all the stuff I've baby proofed (like the <a href="http://livinbetter.blogspot.com/2012/06/little-dude-climbs-stairs.html">stairs</a>).<br />
<br />
Stuff baking soda down drain (I used an old wire hanger to help plunge it down)<br />
Pour vinegar down drain and plug closed. If there is no plug in your drain use a wash cloth. After about 30 minutes pour the boiling water down the drain. I poured about half the water slowly because the sink filled with water. When it drained down I poured the rest. And..........tada! I actually heard a suction sound come from my drain as the clog cleared away, ewww!<br />
<br />
Now my sink drains like it should, I saved roughly 5+ dollars by not having to buy Drano, saved time and gas going to the store, there's one less piece of trash going to the landfill, and one less toxic chemical around the house for curious boys to get into. I feel like Super Mom!<br />
<br />

<br />
Update: A box of baking soda at the commissary was $0.59 and a (I think it was) 1/2 gallon of vinegar was under $2.00.......so this is a very very cheap option at around $0.75 / batch.<br />
<br />

Friday night was a bust as I went at 6:30 to pick up some fast food (oops) instead of LO Chicken salad sandwiches. And Big Dude wanted crock pot roast chicken (again) Saturday so we had that and moved the Crock Pot BBQ ribs to Sunday night (Little Dude loved the ribs!)<br />
<br />
<br />
Sunday 9/9- Crockpot BBQ beef ribs (Little Dude loved them!)<br />
Monday 9/10-Chicken enchiladas with homemade refried beans (leftover black bean mix to use in tortillas also)<br />
Tuesday 9/11- Chicken and spinach pizza with white sauce<br />
Wednesday 9/12 (Big Dude's birthday)- Whatever he wants at home/out to eat<br />
Thursday 9/13-Crab cakes and salad<br />
Friday 9/14-Penne pasta with chicken and creamy white sauce<br />
Saturday 9/15-Pulled pork bbq sandwiches<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All I need to buy this week is milk, eggs, fruit, sandwich bread, and a few snacks. I'm gonna set my budget around $25.00 for the week. Last week I was over by 12 dollars. </div>

I can't believe it's almost over. At the beginning of the month Big Dude and I suffered a personal tragedy and it took me a few weeks to get better. Maybe one day I'll write about it, but not now.<br />
By the time I was better it was Little Dude's first birthday! I can't believe my baby is gone and now he's a toddler. I've got post lined up later detailing his birthday and his party and what not.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
My goals for September are to keep better records of my grocery shopping and menu plans. I also want to try and write a record of what each meal cost to keep my family. That way when money gets tight I can plan a few more of the frugal ones. I think doing this will help make me better organized. Starting Sunday I'm going to post my menu plan for the week and sometime before Wednesday I'll add any grocery shopping I need/plan/want to do. Come back soon and join me as I start my journey (one step at a time..hahahah!)Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593696963201047056.post-30970667917703066262012-07-21T19:02:00.003-07:002012-08-04T05:33:33.644-07:00Free Fun WeekendWow this weekend is packed full of free fun stuff!<br />
First off I took Little Dude to a fire station tour with one of the local mommies groups. He even wore his cute fire truck outfit my dad bought him! He was either too scared to be put down, or walking away from everyone so I didn't get any pictures. I think I want to make this a yearly event. Once he's older Little Dude will really enjoy it. We got to see a fire fighter get dressed in all the gear to show the kids that it's not a scary monster. Little Dude was not going anywhere near the fire fighter once all the gear was on. <br />
<a name='more'></a>Looking at the actual fire truck was really fun for the kids. The got to climb inside and look around and even sit behind the steering wheel and "drive". Little Dude's favorite part of the truck was the reflective parts where he saw that baby he keeps seeing at home. Lol.<br />
After we got home I took a pack of the frozen-now-thawed home fried chicken (that Big Dude did last month) from the fridge and popped them tasty birds in the oven to heat up and whipped up some sides. (I love instant potatoes. Homemade is awesome, but instant works for me.) I<span style="background-color: white;"> packed up the picnic food and headed over to the base for the Navy Seal demonstration. Those sailors are awesome and put on a great show. To start the show the American flag was brought to the ceremony by a seal paratrooping down (totally awesome!) The used boats, hummers, and helicopters to show how some of their drills are done. They "fired" guns with blanks and fireworks on the beach, and even captured a "target" from the audience. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"> Tomorrow Little Dude has a play date with one of my friends and her kids. While he's having fun without mommy (tear), Big Dude and I will be going to the movies for free! YAY! Over a year ago we got rid of Cox Cable and switched to Verizon (and saved half each month!). A few weeks ago Cox sent a coupon for 2 movie tickets through Fandango trying to entice us back. Not going to switch, but thanks for the coupon! </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"> This weekend the only thing planned was the fire house tour. Everything else kinda fell into place. I love weekends like this best. They always have the best memories. </span>Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7593696963201047056.post-71349194848323307032012-07-20T10:57:00.001-07:002012-07-20T10:58:57.514-07:00Emergency savingsWe're a Navy family so 99% of "vacations" are a trip home to see relatives. For us this means a trip to Kansas to see my dad and step mom and a trip to Oklahoma to see my mom (and my siblings), big Dude's mom (and his siblings), and the rest of Big Dude's family. We were gone for 2 weeks and managed to almost empty our emergency savings. First off, on day one traveling to Kansas the AC goes out in my car. We were<br />
<a name='more'></a> still 6 hours away from my dads. And it was 105°...... 105° is HOT. All the windows were down I stripped Little Dude down to his diaper and kept wiping his face with the cold water that was rapidly becoming warm. His poor little face was so red. Big Dude and I were worried about him overheating and kept checking to see if he was breathing every 30 minutes. At least he slept through most the heat. I kept giving him lots of water when he was awake. He refused to drink from his sippy cup for some reason but happily drank some from his bottle. We got the car fixed while in Kansas and enjoyed some wonderful AC the rest of the trip.<br />
Flash forward to when we got home. We were home a few days and I park on the side street and hit a metal corner on the curb that covers the sewer drain. It didn't sound good when I hit it and I cringe as I get out my car. I hear a hissing sound and hope there's a snake nearby (it's bad if you're hoping for a snake).<br />
Please be a snake. Please be a snake. <span style="background-color: white;">There was no snake. I blew my front passenger tire. My car sat in the road slanted and sad looking. </span><span style="background-color: white;">I go inside and tell Big Dude the bad news. He doesn't believe me. I have to tell him 3 times and he still didn't believe me until he went out and looked at it. Luckily we get free towing through our insurance (saved roughly $80.00), so we towed it to the shop that had my tires in stock. </span><br />
<br />
So we're back to rebuilding our emergency fund. It's there for a reason and I'm glad we had it. I keep repeating "at least we had the money" over and over to myself hoping it will make me feel better. But it doesn't. Cause no one enjoys dipping into their E-fund.<br />
<br />
I have some good stuff planned to post and some really cute stories from our trip and updates on Little Dude, but that'll come later.<br />

Little Dude loves bananas. Big Dude...not so much. But that may be due to his being allergic to them. Whatever, more for me. I had about 1/2 a bunch of bananas that decided to start going bad even though they didn't have those yucky brown spots on the outside. I knew we wouldn't eat them up before they were complete mush and since the weather dropped to the upper 70's (for the day) I decided to make some muffins!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-20nnpZQ_SFI/T-rfVHcpdnI/AAAAAAAAADc/gqvIJFFBiWg/s1600/IMG_20120627_061755.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-20nnpZQ_SFI/T-rfVHcpdnI/AAAAAAAAADc/gqvIJFFBiWg/s320/IMG_20120627_061755.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Don't they look yummy? My recipe yielded 18 muffins(some ate some...I wonder who??). My batter was on the runny side so next time I'll also use more flour. All I had on hand was green wrappers left over from Christmas so ignore the green. I'm going to be experimenting with not using wrappers soon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now for the recipe!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Banana Bread Muffins</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 cup sugar</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2 eggs</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 stick butter</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1/2 tbs vanilla extract (optional)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2 bananas</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 cup flour (I used self rising so I didn't need to add anything else and make this supper easy to make)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Mix sugar and eggs in mixer, add butter (I chopped mine into fifths to make mixing easier), vanilla extract, and bananas. Mix well. Add flour (I added 1/2 at a time).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Place 1/4 cup batter into wrapper lined cupcake pan. Bake at 350 for 22 min.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Enjoy!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Luckily it's also the season for free furniture. I can't believe the stuff I'm seeing on <a href="http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites">craigslist</a> this summer. I'm lucky to live in an area that has a very very active craigslist. With everyone moving there's lots of furniture staying behind. It's not always due to being a cheap piece that's broken either. Most of what I've seen it people not having room to take it with them. Bedroom furniture, kitchen furniture, living room furniture.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;">Other stuff is selling for cheap for the same reason. Dishes, pots and pans, older style t.v.'s, wall art. If your in the market for something and a little patient (and not too picky on style) you could get some great stuff for your home. I hope to find a dresser to switch out from Little Dude's room. He currently has a short long one and I want a tall skinny one to give him more floor space to play (I also plan on putting it in the closet where he can't get it as he as recently learned how to open the drawers and pull out <b>EVERYTHING</b> in them and make a huge mess).</span>Karinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998749934224368445noreply@blogger.com0
